Gift Giving at Weddings | Do’s & Don’ts

JW-BlakeNicole-GiftTable

Attending a wedding soon and not sure what is appropriate or expected when it comes to a wedding gift? Not sure whether to give cash or stick the registry? What if you’re not attending the wedding? How much do you need to spend? Don’t stress, we’ve got you covered!  Here’s a list of our top do’s and don’ts when it comes to wedding gift etiquette.

Don’t: Be Afraid to Give Cash
When it comes to giving cash as a wedding gift some people feel it’s a bit too impersonal, but that is absolutely not true. In fact, a lot of couples prefer cash as it let’s them spend it on something they need that they may not be able to register for or something fun and unexpected, like a cooking class on their honeymoon!

Do: Ship the Gift
So you’ve bought your gift, now what? You could bring it to the wedding (and many do!), but consider shipping the gift directly to the couple instead. Not only is it simpler for you, but it’s less stress for the couple on their big day. Now they won’t have to worry about transporting it or have the risk of losing it during the shuffle. We’ve done our fair share of carting wedding gifts to and from venues and take it from us, it’s easier to ship direct!

Do: Stick to the Registry
If you decide to go with a physical gift, stick to the registry! While the couple may end up loving your rogue gift, it’s a risky move and unless you know the couple very well or are in the wedding party, keep it simple and stick to the registry. **If you just got engaged and are looking to start your registry soon, skip to the bottom for our quick tips and recommendations!

Don’t: Overspend
The average wedding gift these days is around $150, but before you pull the trigger take into consideration other factors. How well do you know the couple, what is your budget, are you traveling to the wedding? All of these answers will help determine what the appropriate amount to spend will be.

Don’t: Wait!
Always try to your best to send your gift before the wedding day, especially if you aren’t attending the actual celebration. The old belief is that you have up to a year after the wedding day to deliver you gift, but times have changed! A year is a long time and while ‘better late than never’ is definitely true in this case, try not to wait longer than 3 months after the wedding.

Building your Registry
Are you currently engaged and trying to create your wedding registry? There’s so much to consider when starting your registry and it can be really overwhelming. The most important things to remember are to build it together with your partner, take your time, and have a large variety of items. If you’re not sure where to start, try to find an all-in-one registry that has a wide variety of items. Zola is one of our faves and we’d highly recommend it! They have pre-built Gift Collections that are a great starting point to get an idea of what you’d to register for. And if you want to register for cash, there’s an option for guests to pay for your airfare or renovations or whatever you like, so tasteful!

David + Kristin | All-White Modern Chicago Reception

DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-022David and Kristin asked Team Jayne to help with the design and coordination of their wedding reception as they had already been married at their ceremony in California on April 3rd at a beautiful vineyard. Between their Ceremony and Reception, David & Kristen traveled to Japan for their honeymoon. Everything new we learned about this couple just emphasized how amazing and totally cool they were. Kristin really loves art, they love to travel the world together, and (like us) they love finding the best spots for food.

When putting together the look and feel of the reception, David & Kristin loved the idea of non-traditional so they stuck to an industrial, modern space (Room 1520, thanks for the perfect backdrop!) and a mainly white palette with small pops of color, which gave the entire space a modern, art gallery vibe.

For a modern twist on the all white theme, we spray painted all of our fruit decor white and put them in still-life arrangements throughout the reception.

DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-049DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-050DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-091DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-038Instead of using all white linens, we custom dyed gray ombre’ linens for a subtle pop of color. We also called in Luft Balloons to help us attain our vision of a super cool balloon ceiling installation!

When it came time for music and dancing, the DJ kept it all very hip and modern. This reception was full of young people so everyone was on the dance floor, it felt a lot like a club!

One of our favorite parts of this wedding were these handmade custom menus we hung from the ceiling. We love every opportunity to create something unique that hasn’t been done before.

Blake & Nicole | A Magical Chicago Wedding

We couldn’t be more excited to share the celebration of two of the sweetest, most in love people we’ve ever met. Blake & Nicole live in California where Nicole works as an interior designer and Blake is a talented magician (he’s worked with some of the best and even competed in America’s Got Talent! Check him out at www.blakevogt.com). From beautiful tile centerpieces to a surprise magic trick that made their cake disappear, Blake & Nicole put a little but of themselves in every piece of this wedding.

One of our favorite elements of this wedding was the floating flowers above the head table (thanks Wild Floral Chicago!). They were breathtaking in person and looked as though they were suspended in midair, very magical!

This post is extra special because we get to share not only amazing photographs of the day, but a video as well! Blake & Nicole’s friend and videographer, Andy Heiser, captured the day in this gorgeous video. Take a look & then scroll down to see the incredible photographs of the day courtesy of Janelle Elise Photography!

Now for some gorgeous photographs by the great Janelle Elise Photography.

This incredible ceremony backdrop is one of our favorites to date and was created from 1000 paper cranes with the help of some of our favorite vendors! Keith & Jenine | A Bold, 60’s Inspired Celebration

Keith & Jenine hired Jayne Weddings & Events to style their wedding, selecting our Event Design package. They came to us with the idea of a Bossa Nova (a popular genre of Brazilian music in the 50s-60s) & 60’s inspired wedding.  After tossing around countless exciting ideas (Keith is a producer if LA so not only did he have some awesome ideas of his own, he was such a blast to work with), we landed on what you’ll see below: bright pops of color, giant white leather palm trees, plenty of leafy greenery, and a custom neon sign to tie everything together!

One of our favorite decor pieces had to be the killer white palm trees framing the ceremony space. It was a nice, subtle nudge to the 60’s theme without taking away from their “I do’s”. Oh, and an amazing photobooth backdrop of green palms and personalized neon sign, we had made just for them. We are incredibly happy with how everything came together to create the perfectly bold wedding Keith & Jenine were hoping for.

Photographed by Tuan B & Co with a one-of-a-kind style that couldn’t have been more perfect for this 60’s inspired day.

Jenine also had some random paper lanterns she wanted us to use but didnt know where. So we added some balloons and greenery and whipped up one heck of a entryway piece to welcome guests. It was a surprise and the bride loved it!

Our Top Picks for Wedding Favors

When it comes to providing favors for your guests, you want to make sure you find the sweet spot between too cheap and too expensive, while also giving something that is useful, interesting, or exciting. When in doubt, provide something that you love to use or would love to receive. We’ve compiled a list of fun favors that we hope will inspire you to come up with your very own unique ideas!

Mini Succulents
Whether in a small pot, teacup, or mason jar, mini succulents are a lovely favor to provide your guests! You can even customize them by writing your initials and wedding date on a tag or ribbon. If you want to take it one step further, you could write a cutesy phrase as well: “Watch Our Love Grow” or “Let Love Grow” are fairly popular.

Popcorn
Providing your guests with food or snacks is always going to be a winner at weddings. If you choose popcorn, you actually have a couple of options, kernels or bags? If you choose kernels, try putting them in a funky jar with a catchy phrase: “Thanks for Popping by!” or “Our Love is Poppin’!” If you choose bagged popcorn, try printing custom stickers with your names and wedding date to put on your bags.

Pickled Veggies
A step up from our popcorn kernel idea above; give your guests a jar of pickled veggies of your choice! Just find some cute mason jars and top with a custom sticker.  For some inspiration, here’s a favor display we put together with custom pickle favors for one of our favorite couples: Sara & Martin.

Cocktail Recipe w/ Tool
If you featured signature cocktails at your reception, think about giving the recipe (if it’s a complex cocktail) as a favor. Throw in a fun cocktail tool for added value (think muddling stick, jigger, or strainer) Tie them together with some ribbon and you’ve got a great favor your guests will be sure to appreciate.

Recipe Cards
Recipe cards are a great favor option, personalize them with your names and anniversary date. You can provide blank cards or fill them up with some of your favorite recipes you’d like to share. Whichever you choose, your guests will think of you each time they cook the dish! Check out these from Magnificent Milestones that we featured on Kelly & Bryant’s day.

Confetti
Maybe you want to give favors that are meant to be used that night or at your reception? One of our brides, Emily, (see Chris & Emily’s full day here!) chose to provide her guests with customized boxes of confetti to throw during their grand exit. This is a super fun way to get your guests involved and ensures that your favors will not go to waste! Plus, confetti always looks gorgeous in photos.

Sweets To-Go
A classic, no-stress favor will always be take home dessert. Simply place plain, or customized take-home boxes on your dessert table at the end of the night and watch your guests load theirs up! Get creative with your boxes to make a big impact. These triangle boxes are too fun!

Kara + Tommy | A Quaint Lakeside Affair

We have a very special wedding to share with you today and it is sure to take your breath away. Kara & Tommy’s wedding day was a simple affair at its core but when combined with their thoughtful details, it became an amazing, lakeside paradise. Kara, a designer herself (Check her out at www.karaburke.com, she does incredible work! She designed our holiday cards and even made an adorable stuffed replica of our pup Lula that sits in Cole’s crib!), put together all of the paper goods, favors, cake toppers and her super cute backdrop. Kara also collected a set of vintage glassware for her champagne toast.

Kara & Tommy’s ceremony took place at their families lakeside Chalet on Mullett Lake in Michigan and their guests viewed the ceremony from canoes—so incredible, right? Kara, Tommy, and their guests stayed in cabins on the lake overlooking the water, such a fun wedding weekend for all!

Enough with the preambles, take a look for yourself at Kara & Tommy’s beautifully quaint summer wedding on the lake. Photographed beautifully by The Colagrossis.

Molly + Timmy | A Sparkly, Fun, Quarky, Totaly Cool,Wedding Day!

You know how sometimes you meet people and immediately can just feel how cool they are. Like “I don’t even deserve to talk to these lovers, they are just so cool. They probably bleed glitter and cry donuts they are so cool.” This is exactly how I felt when I first met Molly + Timmy.

This couple is so real. They have a deep love for their families, friends and each other. They have amazing sense of style and a killer eye for design. AND they are big animal lovers! Seriously, If I didn’t love them, I would prob want to slap them they are so cool. Their wedding was no different. Molly hand wrote all of the place cards in her funky handwriting and clipped it to a moleskin field journal as a favor with a sparkly clothespin. She worked with wedding dress designer Veronica Sheaffer to create her wedding look (which is killer, check out her makeup and shoes, the whole thing is to die for!) They had a friends band play live music as they walked down the aisle! Another friend created hand drawn signage for them. They had doodlebooth to keep guests entertained! Foxglove adorned the table with organically shaped dramatic flowers in reds and pinks. The bridesmaids carried gold pompoms! But my favorite part, were the “runners”! Thousands of vintage crystal chandelier pieces where places in rows down ever table. Thousands. Of. Sparkles. WHAT. It all happened at Salvage One, because that is what cool people do.

Jayne Weddings and Events was honored to be asked to coordinate such a stunning, unique and fun wedding!
