Gift Giving at Weddings | Do’s & Don’ts

JW-BlakeNicole-GiftTable

Attending a wedding soon and not sure what is appropriate or expected when it comes to a wedding gift? Not sure whether to give cash or stick the registry? What if you’re not attending the wedding? How much do you need to spend? Don’t stress, we’ve got you covered!  Here’s a list of our top do’s and don’ts when it comes to wedding gift etiquette.

Don’t: Be Afraid to Give Cash
When it comes to giving cash as a wedding gift some people feel it’s a bit too impersonal, but that is absolutely not true. In fact, a lot of couples prefer cash as it let’s them spend it on something they need that they may not be able to register for or something fun and unexpected, like a cooking class on their honeymoon!

Do: Ship the Gift
So you’ve bought your gift, now what? You could bring it to the wedding (and many do!), but consider shipping the gift directly to the couple instead. Not only is it simpler for you, but it’s less stress for the couple on their big day. Now they won’t have to worry about transporting it or have the risk of losing it during the shuffle. We’ve done our fair share of carting wedding gifts to and from venues and take it from us, it’s easier to ship direct!

Do: Stick to the Registry
If you decide to go with a physical gift, stick to the registry! While the couple may end up loving your rogue gift, it’s a risky move and unless you know the couple very well or are in the wedding party, keep it simple and stick to the registry. **If you just got engaged and are looking to start your registry soon, skip to the bottom for our quick tips and recommendations!

Don’t: Overspend
The average wedding gift these days is around $150, but before you pull the trigger take into consideration other factors. How well do you know the couple, what is your budget, are you traveling to the wedding? All of these answers will help determine what the appropriate amount to spend will be.

Don’t: Wait!
Always try to your best to send your gift before the wedding day, especially if you aren’t attending the actual celebration. The old belief is that you have up to a year after the wedding day to deliver you gift, but times have changed! A year is a long time and while ‘better late than never’ is definitely true in this case, try not to wait longer than 3 months after the wedding.

Building your Registry
Are you currently engaged and trying to create your wedding registry? There’s so much to consider when starting your registry and it can be really overwhelming. The most important things to remember are to build it together with your partner, take your time, and have a large variety of items. If you’re not sure where to start, try to find an all-in-one registry that has a wide variety of items. Zola is one of our faves and we’d highly recommend it! They have pre-built Gift Collections that are a great starting point to get an idea of what you’d to register for. And if you want to register for cash, there’s an option for guests to pay for your airfare or renovations or whatever you like, so tasteful!

David + Kristin | All-White Modern Chicago Reception

DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-022David and Kristin asked Team Jayne to help with the design and coordination of their wedding reception as they had already been married at their ceremony in California on April 3rd at a beautiful vineyard. Between their Ceremony and Reception, David & Kristen traveled to Japan for their honeymoon. Everything new we learned about this couple just emphasized how amazing and totally cool they were. Kristin really loves art, they love to travel the world together, and (like us) they love finding the best spots for food.

When putting together the look and feel of the reception, David & Kristin loved the idea of non-traditional so they stuck to an industrial, modern space (Room 1520, thanks for the perfect backdrop!) and a mainly white palette with small pops of color, which gave the entire space a modern, art gallery vibe.

For a modern twist on the all white theme, we spray painted all of our fruit decor white and put them in still-life arrangements throughout the reception.

DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-049DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-050DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-091DavidKristin-JayneWeddings-JeremyLarson-038Instead of using all white linens, we custom dyed gray ombre’ linens for a subtle pop of color. We also called in Luft Balloons to help us attain our vision of a super cool balloon ceiling installation!

When it came time for music and dancing, the DJ kept it all very hip and modern. This reception was full of young people so everyone was on the dance floor, it felt a lot like a club!

One of our favorite parts of this wedding were these handmade custom menus we hung from the ceiling. We love every opportunity to create something unique that hasn’t been done before.

Fruity Collab with Tru Studio

Huge shout out to Tru Studio for really giving a new life to our painted fruit styling! They saw the centerpieces we created for a special couples event and contacted us to style some photos for them. We really could not be happier with how this funky fruit collab turned out. Quirky, colorful, and spunky—just our style! If you haven’t seen the video yet, you need to right now! We’ve also included all of Tru Studio’s awesome shots from the shoot. Team Jayne loves any opportunity to collab on fresh and fun projects with cool people so don’t be shy to reach out!

How to Use Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year: Greenery

This week we’re feeling inspired by Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017, Greenery—a zesty, yellow-green shade that will liven up space or color palette it’s paired with. This color is dying to be used in all of the springtime palettes but we love the unexpected, so we’ve put together a collection of inspiring ideas that will show that you can use this year’s color of the year in a variety of seasons and occasions!

pantone-color-of-the-yeat-2017-designboom-1800

Pantone discusses their choice: “the more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world. this shift is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of greenery in daily lives through urban planning, architecture, lifestyle and design choices globally. a constant on the periphery, greenery is now being pulled to the forefront – it is an omnipresent hue around the world.”

pantone + deep turquoise interior design
Pair ‘Greenery’ with deep turquoise walls, patterned pillows, and black & white accents for a moody, modern interior with style. Trendland

This year was probably the best year for ‘Greenery’ to be chosen as color of the year as the raw, refreshing garden look was truly unleashed during this wedding season. It reminded us a lot of Kristine & Eric’s greenery-filled day. Overflowing ferns and overgrown greenery are a beautiful and natural way to utilize this year’s color in your wedding decor.

If you aren’t looking to redecorate and don’t have any big events you can introduce ‘Greenery’ into, show it off using your makeup! Think fresh green or olive-toned nails and eyes—so fresh! Your Beauty Pantry

Liven up your neutral interior my injecting some green into your accessories and plants. Compliment the green with white and just a small amount of gray or black for a fresh and lively vibe. Concepts & Colorways

We are digging this green velvet cap so much we may just have to order matching ones! The velvet really adds something special. Boohoo

How are you using Pantone’s Color of the Year? Share it with us, we’d love to see!

Team Jayne hearts Macys! | Macy’s Prom

While we love weddings, doing some event design/in store styling for a corporate client is always a fun! Especially when its for one of our favorite department stores and for PROM! We are so excited to share this super cute “Say Yes to the Prom Dress” event we styled at Macy’s this past spring. Complete with custom backdrops, hot pink couches, and punky florals (Thanks, Fleur!), this event was the perfect mix of girly and rocker chic. They even had a DJ! Macy’s host was none other than Fashion Blogger & Stylist Helen Berkun, who was giving out advice and taking photos throughout the event. We’ve sprinkled in some personal photos as well to share even more details with you. :)

We’re going back back…

That’s right, Team Jayne is headed back West from July 12 – 21st to meet with couples, find inspiring new trends, soak up the sun, check out new venues and of course, eat all the Acai! We are also offering a special BONUS for any West Coast couples who meet with us and book while we’re out there! Be sure to contact us for an appointment!

We couldn’t be more excited to venture back to Cali so to contain our excitement, we’ve decided to look back at some of our very favorite Cali weddings.

Sarah + George
letsfrolictogether_20160813_0264
Sarah and George’s Cali affair is one of the most love-filled weddings we’ve had the pleasure of being a part of. This couple is comprised of some of the most giving & thoughtful people, they even hand wrote a note to each guest as their place card. To top it all off, Erin and Grant also SANG a freaking song together in lieu of their first dance. We’re so in love with this day, this couple, and this state! Photography: Lets Frolic Together

Sarah + Dan

This wedding was quite special because Sarah & Dan actually met in Chicago and live in the Midwest. Sarah knew she wanted a destination wedding, and once she saw Gundlach Bundschu Winery, her mind was made up! Many Chicago vendors traveled out West for this wedding, so it truly was a midwest party with a Californian backdrop! Megan & Doug | Surprise Wedding Day!

We’ve been wanting to share Megan & Doug’s awesome day with you for the longest time and we’re so happy today’s the day! This couple is one of the coolest we’ve had the pleasure of working with. Their rock star style and bubbly personalities definitely influenced the vibe of their wedding and reception. They hired Jayne Weddings to help put the finishing touches on their design and bring it to life for their special day.

This wedding was a bit different than any we’ve done in the past in that it was a secret wedding! Megan & Doug’s family and friends were under the impression that they had already been married and were simply celebrating after the fact with their loved ones. The ceremony was held at Roots Pizza and the reception took place at High Dive (a local bar) down the street. It was such an intimate affair and felt so special for us to be a part of the day.

Meet our New Intern Lauren!

Team Jayne is growing again and this time it’s to make room for our new intern, Lauren! Lauren will be assisting us with a few weddings this summer, working on some super special DIY projects, and helping us out with the blog! We couldn’t be happier to have her positive energy and creative mind aboard the Jayne train. :)

LaurenBradley

Name: Lauren Bradley
School: University of Missouri
Random Fact: I am obsessed with Soul Cycle & my favorite food is sushi! I could eat it all the time.
Why I love weddings: Every wedding is different and unique to the couple, but they all celebrate the love and happiness shared between the bride and the groom. To be able to help create that special day for them and be apart of it is an amazing feeling!

Fresh Summer Recipes

I think it’s safe to say that Summer is officially here and here to stay! Summer to us always means food, food & more food. To show you just how much we love to eat, we’ve put together a pretty extensive list of some of our favorite dishes. Don’t worry, we’ve included options for all—whether you’re vegetarian, gluten-free, or just here for the cocktails. ;)

Vegetarian Dishes

Lemon Parmesan Zucchini Chips

Crispy Lemon Parmesan Zucchini Chips with Basil Aioli 800 3110
These zucchini chips are an amazing alternative to fatty potato chips & the added lemon is delish! See the full recipe by Closet Cooking.

Roasted Asparagus Penne

asparagus tomato salad (vegetarian)
Whenever I see penne recipes I usually think “boring”, but this roasted asparagus penne is actually anything but boring. See the full recipe by My Recipes.

Mini Portobello Mushroom Burgers

mini portobello burgers (vegetarian)
If you’re looking for a good burger alternative this is it! The great thing about these portobello burgers is that you can top them with whatever you’d like and create your burger however you lie. See the full recipe to see how Country Living topped theirs.

Chocolate Balloon Bowls

chocolate balloon bowls (vegetarian)
I know we’ve all seen these chocolate ballon bowls before, but they are such a treat to have that we just had to include them. Fill them with your favorite ice cream flavor & you’ve got the perfect desert! See how to make them on BBC Good Food.

Standard Dishes

BLT Summer Rolls with Avocado Dipping Sauce

BLT-Summer-Rolls-2b
This summery twist on the classic BLT by Hapa Nom Nom is a great way to lighten up a traditional BLT.

Grilled Lime Salmon Avocado Mango Salsa Coconut Rice

lime_salmon_mango_avocado_salsa_coconut_rice6.
This dish from Cooking Classy not only tastes as good as it looks but the sweetness of the mango mixed with the sharpness from the fresh red onion compliment the grilled salmon perfectly.

Lemon Lime Bars

Lemon-Lime-Bars-Recipes
If you’re looking for a quick, refreshing desert try out these lemon lime bars by Thistlewood Farms. So simple & makes quite the statement!

Gluten-Free Dishes

Rainbow Thai Chicken Salad

Thai Chicken Salad (GF)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dish as colorful as this. Gimme Some Oven fresh ingredients put a modern (and beautiful) twist on a typical chicken salad.

Jerk Shrimp Wraps

shrimp lettuce wraps (GF)
For those of you who like a little spice in your life, these jerk shrimp tacos from Woman’s Day have just the right about of heat.

Peanut Butter Cookie Bars

peanut butter smores cookies (GF)
Anyone with a sweet tooth is going to want to check out this incredible Peanut Butter Bar recipe by This Mess is Ours. A great alternative to the classic chocolate chip cookie.

Summer Cocktails

Blueberry Basil Moscow Mule

blueberry moscow mule
Kick up your classic Moscow Mule with some blueberries & basil! This sophisticated take on one of my favorite cocktails by Marla Meredith is why this has become one of go-to summer cocktails.

Slushsicles

I cannot get enough of these homemade “slushsicles” from Pear Tree Kitchen. You can use whatever type of mixed drink you prefer, but remember there must be a least a little sugar otherwise it won’t freeze up!

Watermelon & Pineapple Summer Sangria

summer sangria

One of my favorite drinks to experiment with is Sangria because it’s so versatile! I usually just throw in whatever fruit I have around the house. If you want something a little more polished, try this Watermelon & Pineapple Sangria from What the Fork Food Blog.

Blake & Nicole | A Magical Chicago Wedding

We couldn’t be more excited to share the celebration of two of the sweetest, most in love people we’ve ever met. Blake & Nicole live in California where Nicole works as an interior designer and Blake is a talented magician (he’s worked with some of the best and even competed in America’s Got Talent! Check him out at www.blakevogt.com). From beautiful tile centerpieces to a surprise magic trick that made their cake disappear, Blake & Nicole put a little but of themselves in every piece of this wedding.

One of our favorite elements of this wedding was the floating flowers above the head table (thanks Wild Floral Chicago!). They were breathtaking in person and looked as though they were suspended in midair, very magical!

This post is extra special because we get to share not only amazing photographs of the day, but a video as well! Blake & Nicole’s friend and videographer, Andy Heiser, captured the day in this gorgeous video. Take a look & then scroll down to see the incredible photographs of the day courtesy of Janelle Elise Photography!

Now for some gorgeous photographs by the great Janelle Elise Photography.
